What Is Purple Shampoo?

Purple shampoo is an incredibly effective solution for neutralising any unwanted brassiness from your hair at home. It is basically exactly what it says it is. It is a vivid purple coloured shampoo.

What Does Purple Shampoo Do?

Purple shampoo neutralises any visible brassy yellow tones in your hair. It is a hair toner for blonde hair that helps you achieve your desired shade of blonde. It is easy to use at home in between your hairdresser colouring appointments.

What Causes Brassiness in Blonde Hair?

Unwanted brassiness may appear in blonde hair over time. Causes can include not using a heat protectant when heat styling your hair with hair straighteners and hair curlers, exposure to chlorine and environmental stressors, as well as product build up.

How Does Purple Shampoo Work?

Purple shampoo works based on colour theory. Purple is the direct opposite colour on the colour wheel to yellow. As such these two colours cancel each other out. The effect of adding vivid purple pigment to your blonde hair is that it will neutralise any brassy yellow tones in your hair.

How To Use Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo is easy and convenient to use at home. You simply wash your hair in the shower with your usual shampoo as a first wash as normal. This is to remove impurities, product build up, excess oil and environmental pollutants from your hair and scalp.

After rinsing your usual shampoo out of your hair apply the purple shampoo to your wet hair and lather it. Applying purple shampoo to already clean hair will allow the purple pigment to deposit more effectively to neutralise brassy tones.

The amount of purple shampoo you need to use will depend on the product you are using, the length of your hair and the amount of brassiness in your hair that you want to tone.

Usually brassiness appears in your hair near the crown of your head so massage the purple shampoo in at the top of your hair or where the brassiness is visible.

Leave the purple shampoo in your hair for two to three minutes before rinsing it out. If this does not have the desired toning effect then leave it in for slightly longer next time. The length of time required will vary slightly depending on the level of brassiness in your hair and your desired result.

Do not leave the purple shampoo in your hair for longer than 15 minutes however. Leaving in purple shampoo in your hair for too long can give your hair a purple tint. If your hair has a purple tone after using the purple shampoo leave the purple shampoo in your hair for a shorter time next time.

A word of warning, if any purple shampoo splashes onto your bathroom tiles and especially onto your white bathroom grout rinse it off immediately. Purple shampoo can discolour your white grout if it’s not rinsed off. Some people also prefer wearing gloves when using purple shampoo to avoid the risk of the purple pigments discolouring their fingers and nails.

How Often Should You Use Purple Shampoo?

A common question about purple shampoo use is “how often should I use purple shampoo?” I recommend using purple shampoo once a week or every third wash. Overusing purple shampoo, or over toning your hair, can give your hair a dull or ashen appearance so make sure to use your usual shampoo in between your purple shampoo uses.
