Best Silk Pillowcases Australia Silk Pillowcase Benefits

Should I get a silk pillowcase? Are silk pillowcases worth it? My answer to both these common questions is a definite yes! There are so many beauty and health benefits of silk pillowcase use that really do make silk the best fabric for pillowcase use. And then of course there are the luxury and aesthetic benefits too.

Why use a silk pillowcase? To comprehensively answer this question read the following numerous benefits of silk pillowcase use include skin benefits, hair benefits, health benefits and more.

Silk Pillowcase Skin Benefits

There are a lot of benefits of using a silk pillowcase for skin including the following.

Silk Pillowcase Skin Benefits
Silk Pillowcase Skin Benefits

Increases Skin Hydration

Cotton pillowcases draw moisture away from your skin resulting in unwanted lines appearing on your face by the morning. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase does not do this, instead it naturally hydrates the skin while you sleep.

The older I get the more I appreciate this benefit of using a silk pillowcase to prevent wrinkles.

Reduces Pillow Lines on Your Face

Skin friction is caused when you toss and turn at night. Sleeping on a smooth silk pillowcase will reduce this effect.

As a result, sleeping on a silk pillowcase you will wake up in the morning without pillow lines on your face.

Increases the Efficacy of Your Skin Care Products

Sleeping on the best silk pillowcase for skin increases the efficacy of your night time skin care products as your skin will absorb more of the serums, oils, creams and masks that you apply to your skin before going to bed.

This benefit of silk pillowcase usage alone convinces me that the best pillowcases for skin are silk.

I’ve also found wearing a silk eye mask to bed after I’ve applied my eye serum and eye cream extremely beneficial too not only in helping me achieve a restful and comfortable night sleep  but also in my eye area looking rejuvenated and more youthful in the morning!

These above silk pillowcase benefits in my opinion clearly illustrate why the best pillowcase for skin is made of silk.

So in answer to those of who who are wondering ‘are silk pillowcases good for your skin?’ and more specifically ‘are silk pillowcases better for your skin?’ my answer would be a resounding YES!

Silk Pillowcase Hair Benefits

I also especially love using my silk pillowcase for hair benefits. Keep reading why I consider the best pillowcases for hair to be silk ones.

Reduces Hair Split Ends

The smooth surface of silk helps to reduce friction on your hair which is a cause of hair damage in the form of split ends.

Silk pillowcases are a great way to reduce the development of split ends while you sleep.

Click HERE for a comprehensive split ends hair guide about what causes split ends, how to treat split ends and how to prevent split ends.

Reduces Bed Hair & Frizzy Hair

Bed hair and frizzy hair in the mornings is not a good look! They are caused by both friction and dryness over night.

Silk has a natural anti-absorbent property which means it reduces moisture loss from your hair as you sleep. This allows your hair to maintain hydration overnight as opposed to what happens when you use a cotton pillow case which actually draws out and absorbs moisture from your hair.

For this reason together with silk resulting in less friction to your hair overnight, using a silk pillow case will reduce that dreaded bed head look and reduce frizzy hair in the mornings.

I have a curly haired friend who claims that silk pillowcases are the best pillowcase for curly hair to reduce hair frizziness in the morning.

Silk pillowcases really are the best pillowcase for hair.

Best Silk Scrunchies
Best Silk Scrunchies

If you tie your hair up at night or during the day then I highly recommend you use silk scrunchies. Like silk pillowcases silk hair scrunchies are anti-friction, anti-static and anti-hair creases. Plus they look so luxe and beautiful.

Extends Your Blow Dry

Your hair glides across your silk pillow case rather than rubs against it. This can extend the life of your blow dry by up to two days so you can wake up looking like you’ve just walked out of a salon. Now in my opinion, this is definitely one of the best silk pillowcase for hair benefits!

So in answer to the question ‘are silk pillowcases good for your hair?’ my answer is a definite YES!

Silk Pillowcase Health Benefits

In addition to the beauty benefits of a silk pillowcase there are also numerous health silk pillow benefits.

Naturally Hypoallergenic

Silk is naturally hypoallergenic giving it a natural resistance to dust mites, fungus and mould, as well as numerous other allergens.

For this reason silk is perfect as an anti allergy pillow case for asthmatics and many other allergy sufferers.

Silk pillowcases are suitable for all skin types and ages including young children.

Silk’s hypoallergenic properties are why using a silk pillowcase is recommended as the best pillowcase for acne Australia wide. In fact silk pillowcases are often referred to as the best anti acne pillowcase Australia offers. Combined with the benefit of reduced friction on our face while we sleep, silk pillowcases lower the risk of skin infection and skin irritation when compared to pillowcases made from other materials such as cotton. This makes silk the best pillowcase for acne sufferers.

Dermatologists often recommend using a silk pillowcase for acne prevention when used in combination with other treatment and prevention strategies.

As the best pillowcases for acne, silk pillowcases are definitely worth the investment for acne sufferers.

Teenagers have acne prone skin and as the best pillowcases for acne prone skin are silk I have bought all three of my teenage children preventative acne silk pillowcases to sleep on.

Cooler Nights

The benefit of having your room temperature lower while you sleep is that it encourages your body to release melatonin, a vital anti-aging hormone.

By using a silk pillowcase your face will be kept cooler throughout the night than it would otherwise be if you were using pillowcases made from other materials.

Thus silk is the best anti aging pillowcase.

Reduced Chemical Exposure

Our faces are in contact with our pillowcase for approximately 8 hours every night. By using silk pillowcases we reduce our potential contact with chemicals. Silk is produced from domesticated silk worms that are bred in captivity with no predators. Thus no chemicals are needed to protect them. Other fabrics however are produced from chemically intensive crops which do require the use of pesticides.

Luxurious Factor

Finally silk pillowcases have that luxurious pamper factor that just makes them extra special to sleep on. There is no more luxurious feeling at the end of the day than laying your head on a soft, smooth silk pillowcase.

Best Silk Pillow Case Quality Measurement

The quality of silk pillow cases is measured in their fabric weight which is measured in the unit of silk momme, pronounced moe-me. This measurement is used instead of the thread count measure which is used for other bed linens. The more weight that a silk has, the higher the momme measure and the longer the silk will last.

The range of momme usually seen in silk pillowcase brands varies from 15 to 25 momme.

22 momme or higher is considered high quality. Every 22 momme silk pillowcase Australia offers is considered durable, machine washable, wrinkle resistant and luxurious to sleep on.

Is Mulberry Silk Real Silk?

The answer to this is yes. Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk and the best silk for pillowcases. Mulberry silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the Bombyx mori moth caterpillars that are raised in captivity in ideal conditions.

It is called mulberry silk as these caterpillars are only fed mulberry leaves to ensure the silk is the finest available in the world. Their environment is strictly controlled to make sure the silk threads spun are as smooth and light as possible guaranteeing the creation of the best silk.

Mulberry silk has a beautiful shimmering appearance due to the triangular prism-like composition of its silk fibre. This refracts the light at different angles producing that lovely shimmering effect.

Which Is Better Silk Or Satin Pillowcases?

Silk is a natural fibre whereas satin is a man made weave which is made from a combination of other fibres which can include nylon, rayon, polyester and sometimes silk too. Silk is more compatible with our skin and hair.

Satin does not have all the above listed benefits of silk, especially not those associated with silk being a natural fibre.

Silk is also stronger than satin and has a more beautiful shimmery appearance than satin.

The one down side of silk is it’s usually a lot more expensive than satin. The reason for this is that silk is harder to produce and requires thousands of silk worm threads to produce, where as satin is made from predominantly synthetic fibres which are a lot cheaper.

If you want all the skin, hair and health benefits of sleeping on a natural fibre then I highly recommend using a silk pillowcase.

How To Care For Silk Pillowcases

Always check the care instructions on the silk pillowcase you purchase. Generally speaking however all silk pillowcases can be hand washed in cold water and air dried.

Check what the momme value of your silk pillowcase is. The higher the momme the higher the density of your silk. If the momme is higher than 20 then the silk is safe to be machine washed on the delicates setting.

To protect the silk fibres always wash your silk pillowcase in water temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or under. Use the shortest spin cycle possible.

Turn your silk pillowcase inside out to wash and place it in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from other items in the same wash.

Avoid placing your silk pillowcase in the same wash as items with sharp zippers and hooks.

Use a basic detergent with a low pH such as washing soap. Avoid heavy chemicals such as bleach which will harden your silk pillowcase.

Don’t wring the silk pillowcase or twist it to remove water from it as this can causing wrinkling. Air dry your silk pillowcase in the shade.

Iron your silk pillowcase inside out or use a thin sheet of cotton as a barrier between your iron and silk pillowcase to avoid damaging the beautiful sheen of the silk. Use the ‘silk’ setting or the lowest temperature setting possible on your iron.

I have cared for my silk pillowcases in the above manner for over twelve months now and they are still in excellent condition. The silk fabric remains shiny and smooth with that lovely silk sheen.

In conclusion although silk pillowcases are relatively expensive I believe they are the best investment considering the above listed health and beauty benefits of silk pillowcase use and the number of hours we spend each night with our hair and face in contact with our pillows.

Personally, after experiencing the benefits of silk pillowcases for myself, I know that I will no longer sleep on any other type of pillowcase!

  1. Hi,
Great info. I know you can’t cover every brand out there, but ecosa has been making a big name for itself. I bought myself 2 of their silk pillow cases several months back. They fall perfectly in the ‘high end’ category, so thought I’d try them. Apart from them being fabulous for skin and hair I’ve been really disappointed in how they’ve washed up. My initial problem was wrinkling. No matter if I ironed it, didn’t spin it in the machine, anything like that, they are just always crushed! Then the colour started changing. My ‘shell pink’ one has turned this aweful shade of vintage yellowed cream (it was the first one I’d purchased) and my white one much to my dismay has what looks like latte coloured splashes all over it making it look dirty. And no, I didn’t use napisan or anything. Is this normal with silk pillow cases, or am I just unlucky? Or could there be something up with ecosa? Wondering if you could do some asking around for me? It did take a few months to happen by the way.
And one other ‘general’ question about silk pillow cases, are they ment to feel sort of ‘shiny’ almost like satin? Or are they dull but cool and smooth. Thanks heaps!
    Kind Regards Rachel

    • Hi Rachel

Thanks for your comment. I haven’t personally tried Ecosa silk pillowcases so I really can’t comment on this issue you are having with them. I’d recommend contacting Ecosa direct to let them know about your disappointment at how their silk pillow cases wash and as long as you have followed their washing instructions you could ask for a replacement as silk pillowcases should definitely last more than your reported “several months”. I haven’t had this result with any of the silk pillowcases I own.

Regarding your second question silk pillowcases do have a beautiful shiny lustre to them.

      I hope this helps.
      Best regards
      Ingrid

  2. It’s funny as my mum has silk pillowcases but I find them slippery. I know I used to use hers when I’d had a perm as a youngster or if I’d had my hair done.

I had no idea they were so good for your skin as well though!

  3. I love that navy one – and as always you’ve done all the hard work for us. I’ve never owned a silk pillowcase but I’m certainly tempted.
