Is ‘Vegan Lipstick’ the same as ‘Cruelty-Free Lipstick’?
Unfortunately the answer is no! The terms ‘vegan’ and ‘cruelty-free’ are not interchangeable. Let me explain.
Vegan Lipstick Definition
Vegan beauty products, such as vegan lipsticks, do not contain any animal derived ingredients.
A ‘vegan’ label however does not mean that the lipstick or it’s ingredients were not tested on animals.
Cruelty-Free Lipstick Definition
‘Cruelty-free’ means that the product was not tested on any animals. This includes both the finished product, as well as the individual ingredients.
Products do not need to be vegan to be cruelty-free.
Cruelty-free lipsticks do sometimes contain animal derived ingredients.
What Animal Derived Products Do Non-Vegan Lipsticks Contain?
Tallow, which is more commonly known as fat, can be found in non-vegan lipsticks.
Lanolin, which is a liquid derived from sheep’s wool, is another often used ingredient in non-vegan lipsticks.
Finally beeswax is also a common animal derived ingredient added to non-vegan lipsticks.
These are all added to lipsticks to improve their texture and application.
Another animal derived ingredient you may not have heard of is carmine. Carmine is actually crushed cochineal insects. Doesn’t that sound gross to be smearing crushed insects onto your lips!
70,000 female cochineal insects are crushed to make just 1 lb of red dye, which is used in cosmetics, especially in red lipsticks and blushes.
What Are Vegan Lipstick Ingredients?
Vegan lipstick ingredients vary from brand to brand.
Vegan lipsticks use either plant based or synthetic ingredients made in a lab instead of animal derived ingredients.
Natural vegan lipstick contains mineral and natural plant based dyes to create colour. Instead of beeswax they use vegetable based wax for easy application.
Natural vegan lipstick includes coconut oil, jojoba oil, macadamia oil and/or sunflower seed oil to keep lips hydrated.

In answer to the question ‘Is Kat Von D makeup vegan?’ I am happy to report that the entire Kat Von D Beauty product line is cruelty-free and vegan.
The Kat Von D Beauty Studded Kiss Creme lipstick range has a beautiful creamy texture that both looks and feels lovely on the lips. It contains macadamia oil to nourish your lips.
There are three different finishes in this lipstick range depending on which colour you choose. The finishes include satin-matte, glimmer and metallic. They are all boldly pigmented.
I love the stylish studded tube and the embossing on the lipsticks is ever so luxe looking.

Whether you are wanting a vegan red lipstick, a vegan bold berry lipstick, a vegan purple lipstick or even a vegan black lipstick, the Kat Von D Beauty Studded Kiss Creme range of vegan lipsticks will have a shade for you.
I particularly love the dark red vegan lipstick in this range.

Kat Von D Beauty Everlasting Vegan Liquid Lipstick
The Kat Von D Beauty Everlasting Liquid Lipstick range is a vegan matte liquid lipstick range that is also cruelty-free and formulated without parabens.
It is a long-wear, high-pigment vegan liquid lipstick with a smooth, matte finish and all-day lightweight comfort.

That vegan blue lipstick shade looks amazing and several of the nude shades are also calling my name!
